Optional Training

Voluntary, optional training is in addition to the mandatory continuing education and basic training. It will not take the place of any part of the mandatory curriculum and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Because of the hands-on nature of the modules, class sizes will be strictly enforced. Participation is limited to constables who are current with their training, insurance, and certification.

Only constables and deputy constables who are currently in office, and who have achieved certification through the basic training or the waiver examination, will be allowed to attend any optional training course. Current, valid certification is required before any constable or deputy constable can be enrolled or admitted to any optional class.

In order to maintain current, valid certification, a constable must be current with his or her Act 1994-44 Training and have current professional liability insurance on file with the county clerk of courts' office. See Title 37 Law, Chapter 431, for regulations relating to the certification of constables and deputy constables.

Optional Training Tactical (2009)

Defensive Tactics - Compliance Techniques (4 hours)

Many of the tasks of a Constable require the ability to control/move non-cooperative individuals. This class will focus on the techniques used to gain compliance of a non-complying individual without resorting to Tasers, OC, etc. Course will deal with verbal skills, positioning dynamics, control techniques, and use of force. Course will also address situations involving multiple actors.

OCAT Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) Course (4 hours)

This course will certify participants in the use of OC aerosol defense spray. The purpose of the training is the following:

  • to present principles, skills, and techniques of underststanding and using OC;
  • control violent and agressive behavior;
  • reduce personal injury to constables and the general public;
  • increase the Constable's confidence in physically threatening situations;
  • reduce the exposure of civil liability of the Constable for unnecessary or improper force used to control violent and agressive people.

The course provides trainees with information on the physiological effects, and the use and after use of oleoresin capsicum.
